LAGUNA BEACH, CA — Laguna Beach lifeguards are the lifeblood of the shores, especially when summer crowds arrive in full swing. This week, the folks at Visit Laguna Beach sent out a hearty shout-out to the ones who are keeping an eye on the tides and the safety of everyone else in mind.

"A HUGE thank you to our Laguna Beach lifeguards for all that you do!" they wrote on Facebook. "Our city couldn't be all that is without each and every one of you! We appreciate you keeping our locals and visitors safe year round!"

The Laguna Beach Lifeguards also acknowledged a fixture in their community, Lifeguard Mike Guest, who has been a lifeguard since 1977.

Guest shared some thoughts about his career in Laguna Beach in a statement released by Laguna Beach Lifeguards. Most importantly, being a lifeguard has lent him an appreciation of life.

"He loves being part of a team. He loves helping people and teaching people, especially while at the beach," they said.

Things in Laguna Beach haven't changed that much for lifeguards, especially at the rookie academy, according to Guest.

The one difference between today and back then is cliff rescue training, according to Guest—both that and jumping off the Aliso Pier (which doesn't exist anymore).

If you see him, wave hello! and don't forget to check in with lifeguards when you get to the beach and always swim near a lifeguard tower when you're in the water.
