📰 News we're reading
1. Dangerous Surf Shuts Down Laguna Beach Parking Lot As Erosion Moves Sand (patch.com) — Laguna Beach residents are being warned to steer clear of Aliso Beach's west parking lot after powerful weekend surf pushed sand and water into the area, causing erosion and threatening nearby palm trees. City crews have closed the lot, removed nearby electrical lines as a precaution, and are bringing in sand to stabilize the damaged edges while they continue to monitor conditions.

2. OC Cities Increasingly Embracing Homeland Security Grants For Cooperation With Border Patrol (voiceofoc.org) — Laguna Beach police are set to receive $60,000 in federal Operation Stonegarden funds this year for coastal patrol equipment and officer overtime, with officials stressing compliance with California's sanctuary law. The grant, already used locally since 2022, is part of nearly $1 million flowing to several OC cities to support coastal and drug interdiction patrols, not immigration enforcement.

3. Medicaid spent $390 on pathology, lab procedures in Laguna Beach in 2024 (southoctimes.com) — Medicaid spending on pathology and lab work in Laguna Beach jumped to $389 in 2024, a sharp increase though still a tiny slice of overall local Medicaid dollars. The article breaks down which tests drove the costs, how Laguna Beach compares statewide, and how shifting federal Medicaid policy could affect future funding for low-income patients here.

4. California's beaches are being eaten away. El Niño could redraw the coast as we know it (latimes.com subscription) — Powerful storms and rising seas have already stripped so much sand from Laguna Beach that officials had to tie down a lifeguard tower to keep it from washing away. The broader report warns that an expected strong El Niño could bring more erosion, flooding and infrastructure damage up and down California's coast, with local agencies racing to reinforce vulnerable spots.
