Sailboat Strikes Reef And Sinks Off Laguna Beach Coast

A Laguna Beach resident captured a photo of passengers on the sinking boat being approached by a lifeguard while their boat took on water.

LAGUNA BEACH, CA — A 40-foot sailboat was being recovered off the coast of Laguna Beach Monday after hitting a reef and stranding passengers.

The sailboat initially hit a reef just off the coast of Laguna Beach on Sunday evening, near Monument Point and Heisler Park, Marine Safety Chief Kai Bond told Patch.

"Our lifeguards were able to get all of the passengers off the boat and luckily there weren't any injuries," Bond said. "But what happened was, because the boat hit the reef, the cabin took on water."

Bond said the sailboat later sunk due to the damage.

Crews with TowBoat US are currently on the water retrieving the sailboat for salvage, Bond said.

No injuries were reported.
