Activist Zombies Call Shenanigans on Psychic!

These zombies went after James Van Praagh, who claims to speak to the dead. But will he talk to the undead?

Last Wednesday, a pack of activist zombies tried to confront alleged psychic James Van Praagh, who's made a fortune by claiming to possess the power to speak to the dead relatives of people.

The zombie attack—and yes, we're calling it that, because we can—took place in Laguna Beach, possibly at the , where Van Praagh has held $100-per-head "Spirit Circle" events in the past. Regardless, that's absolutely the nearby in the video of the confrontation we're posting here, just a short zombie-shuffle up the road.

The brain-eating brouhaha was organized by reps from the James Randi Educational Foundation, created by magician James Randi. The Florida-based org works to expose paranormal and pseudoscientific frauds, says its website. It offers a $1 million prize to anyone who can prove the existence of the paranormal.

Which is why the zombies came after Van Praagh, whose resume includes being a co-executive producer on the TV show Ghost Whisperer as well as a multitude of talk show appearances. The JREF has challenged Van Praagh to prove that his self-proclaimed abilities are real. But Van Praagh hadn't been returning their calls.

Maybe that's because ... he knows when they're about to phone? Oo-WEE-ooo ...

"We're not rabble rousing," said D.J. Grothe, the president of the JREF and one of the hungry-for-humanburger zombies at last week's confrontation. Grothe told HuffPost Weird News that "(T)his is a guy who is taking advantage of people's grief. He's not performing for entertainment, he's claiming he's giving messages from dead relatives. He gets people when they are at their lowest and sees them as his target market."

Van Praagh spends a lot of time in Laguna Beach, holding those pricey "Spirit Circle" events at the Aliso Creek Inn with some regularity. According to his calendar, he has a couple coming up.

Will zombies again walk the streets of Laguna Beach for those next Van Praagh appearances? Only the undead know for sure ...
