A Busy Weekend For The Movies

The box office numbers are in, and "Act of Valor" is number one followed by Tyler Perry's "Good Deeds."

As Hollywood eagerly awaits the Academy Awards, a pair of new releases debuted with big box office numbers, an industry analyst said Sunday.

Act Of Valor, a movie starring actual Navy SEALs, opened in the number one seat with an estimated $24.7 million take. That's more than double its production cost, said Hollywood.com's Paul Dergerabedian.

"A terrific and even better-than-expected debut for this action drama," Dergerabedian said. "With a production budget of just $12 million, this is a total winner."

Tyler Perry's Good Deeds opened in second place, with a $16 million anticipated gate.

"A 25 percent uptick on Saturday showed great word-of-mouth and audience interest,'' Dergerabedian said.
