If this bill does not get signed into law - it will be years away from getting to this point again.

"Every day 40 people die in this country from prescripton drugs.  In 2010, 1 in every 20 people in the United States age 12 and older-a total of 12 million people-reported using prescription painkillers nonmedically according to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health. Based on the data from the Drug Enforcement Administration, sales of these drugs to pharmacies and health care providers have increased by more than 300 percent since 1999.- (Center's for Disease Control."

RE: Support for AB 472 (Ammiano) 911 Good Samaritain

Dear Governor Brown,

I am strongly in support of AB 472 by Assembly member Tom Ammiano. We have far too many young people dying in our community from drug overdose. Many of the deaths could have been prevented if witnesses had acted more quickly to call 911 or take their friend to the emergency room. AB 472 will help remove some of the fear of arrest that witnesses experience when they are dealing with a life-or-death crisis. I believe strongly that there will be fewer deaths and fewer grieving families if you sign AB 472 into law.

Nine other states have adopted similar reforms: prioritizing saving a life over prosecuting a fairly low level drug crime. California should do the same. Evaluation from the State of Washington finds that drug users are much more likely to call 911 or seek assistance, due to this change in law.

I do not believe this bill condones or encourages drug use. It appropriately protects life and is a complement to policies of drug prevention, drug treatment and law enforcement. We need to help our young people survive the current spread of prescription and illicit drug use, so we can get them into treatment and back on the right track.

Please sign AB 472 by Mr. Ammiano.

Sincerely and respectfully
