Think Before You Give
It's fund-raising time -- walk, run, race and give to the cure for your cause. Answering a few questions will ensure you're giving wisely.

Whether it’s time or money, look into your gift-giving activities; ask lots of questions and get answers. Here are a few places to look to find out about the fundraising body.
Organizational Charter
Find out the reason for chartering the organization. Is it fulfilling the goals? Do they produce results as purported? Are those goals in line with what you want to support?

Financials
Explore the financials and examine them like you would for your investment portfolio. You’re investing your time and money, right? Run a few ratios and get to know the company to which you’ll be giving.

Board of Directors
Take a look at the composition of the board of directors. Look for complementary skill sets and potential conflicts of interest. For example, the charter says one organization goes out of existence once they find a cure and the financials show higher-than-the-usual administration costs (salaries and perquisites). Will that group of executives make choices that will potentially land them out of their jobs? Is their “product” endorsed by the organization when there is a better option out there?
Ask questions and if you can’t find straight answers, find another option. There are a lot of good fundraisers out there!
