WATCH: O.C. Sheriff's Practice Helicopter and Rescue Training in Dana Point

A group of 10 take to the sky to train for possible future recovery/emergency efforts.

It was a busy Tuesday morning recently at Dana Point harbor when a group of O.C. Sheriff's deputies were performing helicopter/rescue training exercises.

"A couple times of year, we put on our scuba gear and go up in a helicopter just outside of the harbor," said Deputy Jim Slikker. "Our team consisted of 10 divers plus a sergeant on the team and all were training that day. We train for the day that we might have to go out past the harbor if a boat capsizes.”

He said in 2001, two young boys were trapped in a cave in the Saddleback Mountains and the only way to reach the caves was via a helicopter.

"When we need to get someplace that cannot be reached by car like the mountains or outside the harbor, we need to get on a helicopter,” he said. "We need to stay current jumping out of the helicopter so we do not land wrong or get our equipment caught on the helicopter."
