Freediver Dies at Crystal Cove

A young freediver died in the water about 400 yards offshore at Crystal Cove State Park.

A man died today while freediving at Crystal Cove State Park near Laguna Beach.

The victim -- one of two Orange County men in their 20s diving about 400 yards from shore and to depths of 45 feet -- didn’t emerge from the water so his companion flagged down a passing boat and lifeguards were notified about 1:35 p.m., California State Parks spokesman Kevin Pearsall told the Orange County Register.

The man’s body was recovered about 3 p.m., Pearsall told the newspaper.

He was pronounced dead at a hospital, The Register reported.

His name was withheld pending notification of kin.
