The unofficial kickoff to summer is this Memorial Day weekend. Here are some fun things to do with friends and family around town.

Time to enjoy this long weekend with the family. One of these local events is a great reminder for kids that Memorial Day is not just another day off of school.
Friday, May 27: Down on the Farm Toddler Program at the Orange County Zoo Children ages 3 and 4 can learn all about cows, chickens, goats, sheep, pigs and more. Class includes hands-on learning and fun crafts. Phone registration is required. Call Marcy Crede-Booth, education coordinator, at 714-973-6846. Cost is $5 per child (one parent included). Friday, May 27 to Monday, May 30: Garden Grove Strawberry Festival Admission is free to this event, which is led by grand marshal Goofy from the Disneyland Resort. The festival includes a carnival, a parade, the largest strawberry shortcake and a VIP breakfast with celebrities. The Garden Grove Strawberry Festival is a nonprofit organization dedicated to raising funds for the community. It has raised more than $5.5 million for local charities since its inception in 1958. Saturday, May 28, from 10-11:30 a.m: Family Bike Ride in Aliso and Wood Canyons Wilderness Park in Laguna Niguel Catch beautiful canyon views on this easy, family-friendly six-mile bike ride with O.C. parks ranger Portia Arutunian. Saturday, May 28, The Adventures of Mr. Potato Head at the Discovery Science Center: From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Join in on this brand new interactive exhibit. The Mr. Potato Head character will lead young visitors and parents on fun and educational adventures. There will be trips to outer space, jungle safaris and archaeological digs. Monday, May 30, Annual Memorial Day Services at Pines Park, Dana Point : From 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Dana Point Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9934 and the city of Dana Point will host a Memorial Day service. This is a solemn service to honor all military personnel who have given their lives defending and preserving freedom for the country and helping others to establish their freedom.
