New awardees will serve as liaisons to communities that could temporarily host spent nuclear fuel from the San Onofre Nuclear Power Plant.

SAN CLEMENTE, CA — The U.S. Department of Energy announced grant awardees that will serve as liaisons to possible communities that could temporarily host the spent nuclear fuel from power plants across the nation, including the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, the San Clemente Times reported.

The announcement was made Friday, June 9, by U.S. Department of Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm as she stood alongside Rep. Mike Levin and other officials for a press conference at the SoCal power plant, which is actively being decommissioned.

According to the report, Granhold said 13 institutions across the country will receive $26 million across the board as part of a three-stage process in identifying a host for a temporary storage facility.
