Who Is Running for City Council?

There are five people who have filed their names with the City Clerk for the upcoming election in November, but not one of them is an incumbent.

By next year, the Laguna City Council will have a very different look. There are three seats up for grabs in the Nov. 6 election. Two of the incumbents can’t run for re-election due to term limits, and the remaining incumbent Mayor Pro Tem Joe Brown has yet to file papers to run in the election.

As of Thursday morning, there are only two candidates who have already qualified to get their names on the November ballot: Jerry McCloskey and Laurie Davies.

Three others have turned in their nomination papers, but officials have not yet verified whether they meet all the qualifications to run for office. Tony English, Brad Barber, and Jerry Slusiewicz are all waiting to find out if they qualify to run.

Another candidate, Jeanette Krembas, has pulled nomination papers from the city clerk’s office, but she has yet to turn them in.

As of now, the deadline for filing nomination papers is Friday, but if Brown doesn’t file for re-election, the filing period will be extended by five more days until Aug. 15.
