Bedridden Woman Perishes in Laguna Niguel Fire

A two-story condominium burned, likely caused by a discarded cigarette.

Firefighters responding to a fire today at a two- story condominium in Laguna Niguel found a bedridden woman in her mid-60s dead in her bed on the bottom floor.

The fire in the 25100 block of Via Catalina was likely caused by a discarded cigarette, said Capt. Steve Concialdi of the Orange County Fire Authority.

Firefighters were sent to the condominium shortly before 6 p.m. and the fire was knocked down by 6:20 p.m., Concialdi said.

The fire caused an estimated $105,000 in damage to the structure and $50,000 to the contents, Concialdi said.
