Daylight Saving 2018: When Does California Spring Clocks Forward?

Sunrise will be about an hour later and there will be more light in the evenings.

CALIFORNIA – Spring has almost sprung, which means we'll soon lose an hour of sleep.

Although the first official day of spring isn't until Tuesday, March 20, the first hint of the turn of the season comes when Daylight Saving Time starts Sunday, March 11.

Daylight Saving Time is the practice of setting clocks forward one hour from standard time in the spring, and back again in the fall, in order to make better use of natural daylight. California law requires that the clock "springs forward" one hour from 2 a.m. on the second Sunday of March to 2 a.m. on the first Sunday of November.

Because of the time shift, sunrise will be about an hour later and there will be more light in the evenings – in most parts of the country. Arizona, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, U.S. Virgin Islands and American Samoa do not observe Daylight Saving Time.

So remember next Saturday night, March 10, to turn your old-school clocks forward an hour before you go to bed. The change is automatic for most smartphones, computers, tablets and other digital devices.
