Do You Have Your Bicycle License?

On Wednesday, San Diego City Council's Public Safety and Neighborhood Services Committee is scheduled to take up a proposal to do away bicycle licenses.

That quaint old tradition of getting a license for your bicycle at fire stations or bike safety fairs when you were a kid could be coming to an end in the city of San Diego.

On Wednesday, the City Council's Public Safety and Neighborhood Services Committee is scheduled to take up a proposal to do away with the oft-ignored section of the city code.

The reason is that bikes have for years now come with their own serial numbers, said Drew Ector, the committee consultant.

Licenses were once distributed at city fire stations, but too often cyclists arrived to find that firefighters were away handling a call. Sales were transferred to bike retailers 16 years ago.

According to city documents, the licensing requirement has netted the city only around $1,300 annually over the past five years.

The documents said discussions with the San Diego Bicycle Coalition and other interested parties did not find any opposition to the proposal to abolish the licensing rule.
