La Jolla Population Up 9.8 Percent in Last 10 Years

2010 U.S. Census data also show a large increase in the number of younger residents.

Residents in La Jolla are younger and more ethnically diverse than they were 10 years ago, according to 2010 U.S. Census numbers.

The U.S. Census Bureau recently released data that allowed La Jolla Patch to drill down into the statistics of our community. We looked in detail at population, diversity, median age and housing characteristics in zip code 92037.

The most significant change, in addition to the 9.8 percent growth from 2000 to 2010 in number of residents living in La Jolla, was the increase in diversity. In 2010, a total of 76.3 percent of La Jollans reported to their race to be “white alone” compared to 82.5 percent in 2010.

Another significant change was median age. The median age dropped to 34.7 from to 38.4 in 2000. The two fastest growing age groups were 15 to 19 years of age and 20 to 24 years of age. Those two groups made up 26.3 percent of our total population in 2010 compared to just 21.2 percent in 2000.

Total population grew 9.8 percent to 46,781 from 42,603 a decade ago. The growth in La Jolla rose in step with population growth in both San Diego County and the state.

Lastly, more of us were renting in 2010 compared to 2000. You can thank the housing market bubble burst for that one. The percentage of vacant homes in 92037 grew from 9.6 percent of the total housing inventory in 2000 to 13.1 percent in 2010.
