Local High School Wins Grunion Bowl

Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography hosted an science-based quiz bowl on Saturday. Scripps Ranch High School took home the title.

“What phenomenon is believed to result in the formation of most submarine canyons?”

A total of 18 teams from 11 area high schools participated in an oceans-themed quiz competition on Saturday at answering science questions like this one. Scripps Ranch High School won this year's competition, called the Grunion Bowl. They will advance to the national competition in Baltimore this April.

The high schools that participated were Canyon Crest Academy in San Diego, Carlsbad High School, Christian High School in El Cajon, Dana Hills High School in Dana Point, Escondido Charter High, Scripps Ranch High School, Helix Charter High in La Mesa, , Mar Vista High School in Imperial Beach, Santa Rosa Academy in Menifee and Tesoro High School in Las Flores.

Dana Hills High took home second place.

The National Oceans Sciences Bowl hosts academic competitions like the Grunion Bowl, that test high school students' knowledge of marine sciences including biology, chemistry, physics and geology.
