New Golden Triangle Carpool Lanes, Ramp to Open Soon
The improvements were designed to relieve traffic congestion on Interstate 805 in Sorrento Valley.

San Diego, CA — Traffic relief is coming to San Diego's chronically congested Golden Triangle area.
On Thursday, regional officials and business representatives will attend a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the completion of four miles of carpool lanes on Interstate 805 from state Route 52 to Mira Mesa Boulevard and a south-facing direct access ramp at Carroll Canyon Road.
Expected to open to through traffic in about a week, the new facilities will provide traffic relief in Sorrento Valley, one of the region’s leading employment hubs by providing additional transportation choices, according to the San Diego Association of Governments.

The new ramp in the Sorrento Valley area will allow carpools, vanpools, permitted clean air vehicles and motorcycles to directly enter and exit carpool lanes without weaving through general purpose lanes.
The $119-million infrastructure improvement project was funded by local TransNet half-cent sales tax and state and federal dollars.

The improvements represent Stage 1 of the five-stage I-805 North Express Lanes Project to widen the freeway to accommodate four carpool, or High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes, from SR-52 to La Jolla Village Drive and two carpool lanes from La Jolla Village Drive to just north of Mira Mesa Boulevard, according to KeepSanDiegoMoving.com.

The five-stage project also consists of constructing direct access ramps at Nobel Drive and Carroll Canyon Road, a Park and Ride and Transit Station at Nobel Drive, a direct freeway-to-freeway HOV connector in the median from westbound SR-52 to northbound I-805 and southbound I-805 to eastbound SR 52, and reconfiguration of the Governor Drive interchange.
