Ellis, Lightner to Face Off in November

Updated: 5:50 a.m., June 6, 2012: With 100 percent of the precincts reporting Ray Ellis and Sherri Lightner earn spots to square off against each other in the November election. 

Ellis, a businessman, earned 45.54 percent of the vote and Lightner trailed with 41.63 percent. Neither hit the 50 percent mark to capture the win in the primary.

Bryan Pease earned 7.22 percent of the vote and Ridz 5.6 percent.

Updated: 1:12 a.m., June 6, 2012: With 89.3 percent of the precincts reporting, Ray Ellis has 45.8 percent of th vote. And Sherri Lightner trails with 41.41 percent, more than 5 hours after the polls closed.

Updated: 12:19 p.m., June 6, 2012: With 61.3 percent of the vote in, Ray Ellis earned 45.79 percent of the vote. Sherri Lightner follows with 41.46 percent of teh vote. Bryan Pease has 6.95 percent and Dennis Ridz has 5.82 percent.

Updated: 11:34 p.m., June 5, 2012: With 48.4 percent of the vote in, Ray Ellis continues to maintain his lead with 44.82 percent of the vote. Sherri Lightner trails with 42.36 percent of the vote.

Updated: 11:18 p.m., June 5, 2012: With 40.9 percent of the precincts reporting Ray Ellis leads with 44.62 percent of the votes. His lead over incumbent Sherri Lightner is just 1.87 percent. Lightner has 42.75 percent of the vote, Bryan Pease has 7.03 percent and Ridz has 5.59 percent.

Updated: 10:58 p.m., June 5, 2012: With 21.5 percent of the precincts reporting Ray Ellis earned 45.28 percent of the overall vote, followed by Sherri Lightner with 41.91 percent of the vote. Ellis' lead narrowed from earlier in the evening.

June 5, 2012, 8:58 p.m.: With 12.9 percent of the precincts reporting Ray Ellis edges over Sherri Lightner with 45.59 percent of the vote. 

Candidates for District 1 are Ray Ellis, Sherri Lightner, Bryan Pease and Dennis Ridz.

Ellis provided the following bio about himself online:

Ray Ellis never thought he’d run for public office. Having spent most of his life building businesses and raising a family, he’s been involved in the community through charitable work, civic service, and youth sports. But when Mayor Jerry Sanders asked him to volunteer to help reform the city pension system by serving on the San Diego City Employees Retirement System Board, Ray couldn’t say no.

As president of the pension board, Ray saw first-hand how our city’s increasing pension liabilities jeopardized the services our families depend on: public safety, roads, parks and libraries. He watched a dysfunctional City Council stagger from one crisis to the next, incapable or unwilling to make the tough decisions needed to get the city back on track.

Serving on the retirement board, Ray was powerless to change the policies passed by the Council. That’s when he decided that the only way to straighten out City Hall and make it work for us again was to run for council himself. He wants to use his experience as a job creator and community leader to make our city government what it should be: effective, accountable, affordable, and transparent.

 

In a virtual Q&A, Lightner provided this bio about herself:

I am a 50+ year resident of San Diego. I attended Crawford High School and earned a B.A. in Mathematics and Sociology and an M.S. in Applied Mechanics and Engineering from UCSD.  My husband, Bruce, and I have been married for 39 years and have lived in La Jolla Shores for the past 20 years. We have 3 children, 2 dogs and 2 cats. I am a licensed Professional Mechanical Engineer who worked for 23 years in private industry at General Atomics and Rohr Industries. My husband and I formed a small consulting business 13 years ago.  

Prior to being elected to City Council in 2008, I was an active community volunteer for more than ten years, including serving as a Girl Scout Troop leader, Sunday School teacher, soccer mom, president of the La Jolla Town Council, chair of the La Jolla Shores Association, secretary of the La Jolla Community Planning Association, and a member of the La Jolla Kiwanis, the La Jolla Historical Society and a variety of other community groups.
