Scripps Green Hospital Listed in Top 10 in Surgical Safety List
"Consumer Reports" released its first ever rankings in surgical safety for U.S. hospitals.

Scripps Green Hospital was one of only two medical centers in California to make Consumer Reports magazine’s Safe Surgery Survival Guide. The report reviewed 2,463 hospitals from 2009 through 2011.
Consumer Reports' rankings were based on billing claims data from Medicare patients who underwent surgeries at 2,463 hospitals from 2009 through 2011. The analysis reviewed the percentage of surgery patients who died in the hospital or stayed longer than expected and other factors.
“We wish we had access to more comprehensive, standardized information, but this is the best that is available,” said John Santa, M.D., M.P.H., medical director of Consumer Reports Health in a statement. “Our surgery Ratings give patients more information so that they can make informed choices before surgery,” he adds. “And we hope that by highlighting performance differences, we can motivate hospitals to improve.”
