Sinkhole in UTC Closes Streets

A large sinhole opened on a University City street on Thursday morning causing roadway closures. The sinkhole opened in the middle of Campus Point Drive before 7:30 a.m., according to San Diego police.

A stretch of Campus Point Drive was closed while authorities worked to determine what caused the problem and to make repairs. Street crews rerouted traffic through the parking lot of an office building on the corner of Campus Point Drive and Campus Point Court. This neighborhood is north of Genesee Avenue and .

Crews with the San Diego Water Department shut off the main that serves the neighborhood as a precaution, though officials believed a ruptured storm drain might have been to blame, SDWD spokesman Arian Collins said.
