'The Stratford': Prepare to Be Charmed

Not even a block off downtown Del Mar's thoroughfare sits Stratford Court Café—more affectionately referred to as “The Stratford” by locals.

Its ambiance mimics a relaxing morning or afternoon on the deck of a Cape Cod-style home. Diners place orders at a central window and are then provided with a numbered stand to signify delivery to the table of their choice.

Selections etched on chalkboard menus include Waffle of the Week (W.O.W), combination platters and bagel plates for breakfast, and an assortment of sandwiches, soups and salads for lunch. Coffee drinks are also available, as well as a generous list of smoothies—try the Soyberry Swirl for a lowfat treat with a fruitful body and welcome hint of honey. Another pick is The Del Mar Sandwich; you can’t go wrong with its generously sliced piles of smoked turkey and farm fresh avocado.

The vibe is mellow and inviting, suggestive of a “take off your shoes and stay a while” mentality. While we don’t suggest actually removing your footwear, we do recommend visiting for a pleasant morning or afternoon, perhaps incorporated as a stop during a coastal bike ride.

The Stratford is located at 1307 Stratford Ct. just off 13th Street in Del Mar. A fence shelters the garden seating from the street, so look for the sign posted on the sidewalk. Hours of operation are Monday-Friday, 7 a.m.-3 p.m. and Saturday-Sunday, 7 a.m.-4 p.m.
