Lanes Cleared On 91 Freeway Following Fatal Incident

The deadly incident came after a motorist crashed into the center divider of the freeway.

RIVERSIDE, CA — Traffic lanes were clear late Monday morning on state Route 91 following a fatal crash earlier in the day.

The fiery crash was reported about 2:40 a.m. on the eastbound side of the freeway east of Arlington Avenue, in Riverside, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The fatal incident came after a motorist smashed into the center divider of the freeway.

The CHP stated that a white Nissan Altima being driven in the No. 3 lane at an unspecified rate of speed veered to the right and crashed into the right shoulder wall.

The vehicle "was redirected to the left, struck the center median and became fully engulfed in flames," the CHP said.

The driver was unable to exit the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim's identity was not released pending notification of next of kin.

No other injuries were immediately reported.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the CHP.

All lanes were closed for about two hours, according to the CHP.

As of 9:15 a.m., the usual Monday morning westbound 91 freeway slowing was reported on SigAlert.com, but there were no incidents.
