Blaze Burns Near Corona Municipal Airport

Crews had fire under control in less than an hour, officials said. This Corona fire follows Thursday's that threatened homes near 91 Freeway

CORONA, CA – A brush fire broke out Friday northeast of Corona Municipal Airport, burning just over an acre before crews gained the upper hand. The blaze was reported about 11:15 a.m. in the area of Corydon and Rincon streets, south of the Santa Ana River bottom.

Multiple Corona Fire Department engine crews, as well as personnel from the Riverside County Fire Department, deployed to the slow-moving brusher, establishing a protective perimeter along Hedges Drive, according to reports from the scene.

The flames were stopped before approaching homes on Hedges, and the fire was largely contained by 11:50 a.m. There was no word on what triggered it.

And on Thursday, a five-acre wildfire that broke out on a hillside in Corona and spread rapidly toward a residential area was stopped before it reached homes.

Corona and Riverside County fire crews were sent to the location, along with crews from the cities of Anaheim and Riverside, providing mutual aid, according to reports from the scene.

Flames raced toward the backyards of homes on Juniper and Bayberry drives, and Corona police officers initiated evacuations at those and other locations within the Sierra Del Oro enclave.

However, with help from Cal Fire water-dropping helicopters and airtankers, the fire's forward rate of spread was halted about 12:10 p.m., at which point evacuations were rescinded. By 1:30 p.m., the fire was fully contained, officials said.

The cause of that fire was under investigation.
