EVMWD Combats Misleading Information About Its Water Quality

Door hangers being left at the homes of some Elsinore Valley Municipal Water District customers are implying that drinking water in the area is unsafe, and the water district is reaching out to dispel the misinformation, an official said today.

EVMWD officials are unclear at this time who/what company is behind the door hangers, but they believe it may be an attempt to sell district customers in-home water treatment or Reverse Osmosis systems, according to a statement from EVMWD General Manager John Vega.

District spokesman Greg Morrison further explained the door hangers are very misleading because they cite an article published by the Press-Enterprise in which the reporter investigated allegations of contaminated water distributed by Wildomar-based County Water of Riverside, not EVMWD. The allegations in the Press-Enterprise article are not related to EVMWD, Morrison continued. Additionally, County Water of Riverside is not affiliated with EVMWD.

Morrison said the door hangers are problematic because they imply the contaminated water is being distributed by EVMWD when it is not. The door hangers have been found in Lake Elsinore and Wildomar, Morrison said.

District officials are encouraging their customers to be wary of any individual/company who claims EVMWD water is not safe, especially if it's someone attempting to sell products, according to Vega's statement.

Additionally, the district has launched a social media campaign to combat the misinformation, Vega's statement said.

EDITOR'S NOTE: on water quality. According to the report, state public health officials find EVMWD's water is safe. However, County Water of Riverside has been cited by the California Department of Public Health for having high levels of nitrates in its water.
