New Lake Elsinore Speed Limits Approved By City Council
A total of 31 street segments were approved for speed limit changes to ensure Lake Elsinore keeps them from being flagged as "speed traps."
LAKE ELSINORE, CA — Lake Elsinore city council greenlighted speed limit changes across the city Tuesday night. The council listened to recommendations for increasing the speed limit across a spate of roadways while decreasing the speed limit elsewhere, in accordance with California state law. The motion passed unanimously.
Every seven years, local and state agencies must evaluate if most drivers follow the speed limit, according to City Engineer Remon Habib.
The resulting recommendation calls for 31 street segments to see some level of speed limit change.

Lake Elsinore’s engineering staff worked with an independent survey team to review 100 city street segments and evaluate if current speeds align with the 85th percentile of free-flowing traffic. They also evaluated recent collision history and conducted in-person field reviews of problem areas to decide where 5 mph changes should be considered.
Habib estimates around 100 speed limit signs will need to be revised or purchased and installed to reflect the speed limit changes, following the City Council’s approval. Sign purchases are part of Lake Elsinore’s Capitol Improvements Project funding.
