Lake Elsinore to 'Shake it Out'

Community Organization Helps Southwest Riverside County Prepare For "The Big One"

LAKE ELSINORE, CA. – In a ongoing effort to raise public awareness throughout the Southwest Riverside County region of the critical importance for individual, families and communities to plan and prepare for the occurrence of a catastrophic disaster event such as a major earthquake, the City of Lake Elsinore and its volunteer CITIZEN CORPS organization will be presenting its 5th annual SHAKE OUT EXPO on Saturday October 18th, 2014 from 10:00am to 3:00pm at the city’s historic Diamond Stadium; home of the Lake Elsinore STORM baseball team.

The SHAKE OUT EXPO is an admission free, “fun-festival” like public event designed to communicate through live presentations, hands on interactive demonstrations and exhibitions an essential knowledge for personal emergency disaster planning and preparedness.

Our central interactive attraction “THE SEVEN STEPS TO EARTHQUAKE SAFETY”, hosted by local Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) volunteers, walks our SHAKE OUT EXPO guests through safe and necessary emergency preparedness practices in a family fun way. Completing the SEVEN STEPS enters the guests in the EXPO’s hourly prize drawing for valuable emergency equipment and supplies.

National, State, County and regionally based volunteer emergency response and search & rescue organizations such as, CERT, Ham Radio Operators from GTARC (GoldenTriangle Radio Club), and the AMERICAN RED CROSS, along with professional emergency responders CALFIRE, RIVERSIDE COUNTY SHERIFF DEPARTMENT and OFFICE OF EMERGENCY SERVICES will be on hand at the SHAKE OUT EXPO to demonstrate and share their emergency preparedness expertise and planning knowledge in on what the public should expect from first responders not if, but when disaster strikes.

As in past years, the SHAKE OUT EXPO is happy to have support partnerships with a select group of nationally known safety and emergency preparedness suppliers and equipment manufactures along with other local merchants who will be on hand at the SHAKE OUT EXPO MARKETPLACE to demonstrate and sell the latest in innovative emergency tools, supplies and technologies. Many of these vendors are contributing valuable emergency supplies and products to be included in the THE SEVEN STEPS TO EARTHQUAKE SAFETY prize packages. Thanks to Sponsor/Vendor Ready Books, the first 1000 guests to attend will received a FREE READY™ PERSONAL PREPAREDNESS PLAN BOOK valued at $10 and there will be more FREE gifts for attendees at the event. Also, Sponsor/Vendor Ready America will be on hand with their “BIG SHAKER” trailer, which attendees can ride to experience what its like to be in a M6.4 earthquake!

Last years SHAKE OUT EXPO was our biggest year ever due to our staging the event at the DIAMOND STADIUM facilities. This year we plan to expand the SHAKE OUT EXPO footprint for more exhibit activity, more guest speakers, more vendor participants and many more attendees.

The SHAKE OUT EXPO is a unique community grown event inspired by and in support of the statewide GREAT CALIFORNIA SHAKE OUT earthquake event and drill which is scheduled for Thursday, October 16th at 10:16am.

As a participating member of the California Earthquake Alliance and the GREAT CALIFORNIA SHAKE OUT we have access to resources for outreach support for the event. Here are a few of the comments we have received over our last four years in staging the SHAKE OUT EXPO:

We applaud your efforts to teach your community to be prepared for an earthquake or other emergency that might happen in your area.” - Steven Tharratt, MD, MPVM, Past Director, California Emergency Medical Services Authority

“This is so awesome... just what we want to see happening!” - Mark Benthien, Director for Communication, Education and Outreach, The Great California Shake Out

“I am so excited about Lake Elsinore’s participation and outreach efforts for disaster resiliency. You are a role model for other communities and we can post the work you are doing on our web site for other communities as an example.” - Margaret Vinci, Manger of Earthquake Programs, CALTECH

“Great to hear from you and this sounds like a really great event. I’d be happy to participate. Please be in touch with ways I can be of assistance.” - Dr. Robert de Groot, Educational Outreach Director, Southern California Earthquake Center

“I’m just writing to let you know how inspiring it is that your group is taking advantage of ShakeOut and making it your own! “Thank you for bringing this great event to our attention. It’s exciting to see people moving forward and planning events that will help educate and ultimately save lives.” - D’Anne Ousley, Media Specialist, California Earthquake Authority
