On December 1, LEUSD received an update from CIF Southern Section about unresolved issues for the 2020-21 Athletic Season due to COVID-19 pandemic considerations. CIF has also published a “Statement Regarding Education-Based Athletics for 2020-21 School Year,” to express concern about a delay in youth sports guidance from the California Department of Public Health (CDPH).

As a result of worsening pandemic conditions and the postponement of new guidance from CDPH, CIF is removing all Regional and State Championship events from their Season 1 Sports Calendar. The Fall Sports Calendar and Spring Sports Calendar for the 2020-2021 are otherwise unchanged.

LEUSD concurs with CIF concern about the pandemic being worse now in December than in July, when CIF first issued its modified 2020-21 Sports Calendar and schedule. Riverside County has been in the State’s most restrictive COVID-19 risk tier, purple, since October 20, 2020, and local metrics for case and positivity are also trending upward at an alarming rate.

For the reasons above, LEUSD has recommended the suspension of previously allowed athletic conditioning and workouts effective Saturday, December 5, 2020 until we can reassess conditions further.

Athletic Directors and coaches were instructed to contact all affected students by the morning of Friday, December 4. This message is intended as a notification follow-up.

Please watch for an update after January 4, 2021. If you have any questions, please contact your school's Athletic Director and/or coaching staff.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

The LEUSD Administrative Team
