"Congressman Calvert's nominations are made on a strictly competitive basis," according to a statement from his office. "Candidates are judged on their scholastic achievements, leadership performance, athletic participation, community service and motivation."

Each member of Congress can nominate 10 prospects to attend an academy, excluding the Coast Guard Academy, which does not require congressional sponsorship. Students must be juniors or seniors before they can apply.
