Woman Gunned Down In Lakeland Village, 2 Arrested: Sheriff's Dept.

Sheriff's officials say a woman was shot multiple times.

LAKE ELSINORE, CA — Two Lake Elsinore men are behind bars at the French Valley jail, suspected of trying to kill a woman in Lakeland Village this week, sheriff's officials said Tuesday. The woman, who was shot multiple times, is expected to survive, the agency said.

The shooting happened around 7:30 p.m. Monday near the intersection of Grand Avenue and Marie Drive, according to sheriff's Sgt. Brett Seckinger.

"A uniformed deputy sheriff was in the area on an unrelated incident when he heard two gunshots followed by a volley of several shots," Seckinger said in a news release. "The deputy then observed a vehicle leaving the area, 'blacked out' and attempted to catch up to the vehicle."

Though the deputy couldn't catch the vehicle right away, he soon found it parked in front of a Lake Elsinore residence on Leeward Way with "evidence it had been involved in a shooting," the sergeant said.

At the same time, a 911 call was made to sheriff's officials regarding a woman who had been shot near Grand Avenue and Marie Drive, Seckinger said. Paramedics and police responded there and transported her to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Meanwhile, over on Leeward Way, the deputy who found the vehicle called for backup and a perimeter was set up, Seckinger said. Two men were detained at the location and ultimately arrested.

The alleged gunman, identified as 20-year-old Elijah Lamaj Crayton, was booked on suspicion of attempted murder, jail records indicate. His bail was set at $1 million.

Carnell Johnson, Jr., 27, was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and for being a felon in possession of a firearm. His bail was set at $25,000, according to records.

Police did not provide a possible motive for the shooting.
