Cougar Spotted In Irvine Over Long Weekend, Police Urge Caution

The sighting is being monitored by the city's Animal Services Unit, authorities said Tuesday.

IRVINE, CA — A mountain lion was spotted over Memorial Day weekend in Irvine, the Irvine Police Department reported.

The cougar was reported in a neighborhood around Trabuco Road and Keystone, near Woodbury in Irvine.

"Development and wildfire displacement have likely contributed to a slight increase in mountain lion sightings in Irvine over the past few years," an Irvine Police Department news release read. "Our Animal Services Unit closely monitors all lion activity, and we likely see fewer sightings than in other areas in Orange County since we do not have the larger food sources they prefer."
