SANTA ANA, CA - A Los Angeles-based company Wednesday announced plans to roll out an electric scooter rental program in Santa Ana, the first in Orange County, by the end of the month.

Sun Scooter Inc. hopes to launch the program between March 29 and April 1, said company spokesman Kevin Ellyson.

Users pay a buck to unlock the scooters and then 15 centers a minute, he said.

The company plans to put 100 scooters throughout the city, including high-traffic areas such as Main Street downtown and Santa Ana College, according to Ellyson, who said the company is also "in talks with multiple other cities, including Anaheim, Newport Beach and Huntington Beach."

The company is also working with some nonprofit organizations, such as NOVA Academy, to provide students at the campus in the 500 block of W. Santa Ana Boulevard a way to conveniently get home or to work when they don't have reliable transportation, according to Ellyson.
