Fiery Crash On 73 Toll Road Kills SUV Driver Overnight

Emergency responders were unable to save the driver of a Volvo, who died at the crash scene after striking a concrete column.

IRVINE, CA — An SUV driver was found dead inside a vehicle that burst into flames after crashing into a concrete support column under the SR-73 Toll Road in Irvine, authorities said Friday.

Shortly after 10:15 p.m., a driver crashed while traversing Bonita Canyon Drive under the 73 Toll Road, according to the Irvine Police Department. This was a single-car crash, according to the department.

Police officers, with the Newport Beach and Orange County Fire Authority firefighters, found a 2008 Volvo SUV in flames, police said.

After dousing the blaze, firefighters found the driver dead inside the SUV, police said. The driver's name, age, and gender were not released pending notification of next of kin.

According to police investigators, the Volvo driver was southbound on Bonita Canyon Drive when they lost control, striking the concrete column with deadly force, police said.

The reason for the loss of control remained under investigation by the Irvine Police Department Major Accident Investigation Team.
