Firetruck Flips, Injures 8 Firefighters In OC Rollover Crash

Eight Orange County firefighters were injured Thursday night in a crash involving a fire department ambulance.

IRVINE, CA — An Orange County Fire Authority firetruck ambulance flipped on the Foothill (241) Toll Road in Irvine Thursday night, injuring eight firefighters — some who were required to be airlifted out, authorities said.

The crash was reported at 6:54 p.m. near Tomato Springs Road, where an OCFA ambulance rolled over, the California Highway Patrol reported.

A helicopter landed on the northbound side of the toll road shortly after 7:15 p.m., and the toll road was closed at Irvine Boulevard to the northbound San Joaquin Hills (133) Toll Road, according to the CHP log.

KCAL reported that at least eight people suffered injuries, and several victims were airlifted to a hospital.

According to Orange County fire officials, all eight of those victims are OCFA firefighters who had been battling against the Airport Fire in Trabuco Canyon.

Fennessy said fire officials would have more details regarding the crash and the condition of the firefighters on Friday.

"We ask that you pray for our firefighters and their families. This is the beginning of a long road for our firefighters and their families," he said.

The crash left six firefighters with severe injuries and two with minor, authorities said.

KTLA reported on the scene that a firetruck ambulance was seen overturned on the freeway and blocking traffic with debris littering the lanes.
