"For over three years, our DARE officers have driven attention-grabbing and one-of-a-kind vehicles that never fail to turn heads and excite students," the IPD said in a statement. "IPD believes in the continual education of students and is one of only two DARE programs in the entire state."
According to The OC Register, the truck — plus its aftermarket equipment installation — cost the department more than $150,000. An outfitted Ford Police Interceptor patrol car costs roughly $116,000, the newspaper reported.
A fact sheet released by the Irvine Police Department estimates the department will save roughly $6,000 in gas over five years, and the truck should be in service for roughly 10 years.
