OC Man, 20, Shot By Police While Experiencing Mental Health Crisis

The man called police and told authorities he was experiencing a mental health crisis Tuesday.

IRVINE, CA — An armed 20-year-old man who called 911 saying he was experiencing a mental health crisis was fatally shot by police Tuesday, authorities said.

Police were called to a home in the Turtle Rock neighborhood at around noon in the City of Irvine regarding a man who was experiencing a mental health crisis, according to the Irvine Police Department.

Officers and other trained professionals negotiated with the man for more than an hour before he rushed at officers while holding a knife, police said.

The shooting occurred at Sungate and Silkwood, Azarcon said.

The man was taken to Orange County Global Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead. His identity was not released.
