Parks Workshop - Summary

Suggestions for Regency and Borrego parks

The fourth in our series of park improvement workshops took place Saturday from 10 am to 11 am at Regency Park. About two dozen people showed up, most of them from Regency Park and a few from Borrego.

There was a hearty discussion of issues, following which residents highlighted the issues that were of importance to them. Much of the conversation centered on the idea that the residents were happy with these 2 parks but wanted improvements. Here’s the list of the main items that received the most requests from residents

BORREGO

  • Benches facing the overlook (This is one of the most beautiful vistas in the city).
  • Better and safer equipment (e.g., swings, rock climbing wall, tunnel slide), with shade.
  • Replace sand with turf
  • Poop bag dispensers often run out of bags
  • More trash bins to reduce littering

REGENCY

  • Walking path
  • Better scheduling of soccer games (too much overlapping traffic)
  • More trees to replace those that were cut down
  • More trash bins to reduce littering
  • Due to the large number of cars that drive soccer players to the area, it was recommended that a portion of the “down below” part of the park (along Osterman) be converted into a parking lot for the park visitors.

All the residents in both areas rejected the idea of a bathroom, because of the fear that undesirable elements would be attracted to the park to use the bathroom.

Residents from both parks were concerned with night-time activities in the park and wanted better police presence.

Parks workshops will continue in March. The consulting firm will prepare a report for the Parks Commission who will prepare recommendations for the Council to consider in our budget meeting later this year.
