Class of 1987 Gears Up For 25th Reunion

Hundreds of El Toro graduates are expected to reunite this summer in Lake Forest at the Sun and Sail Club.

A swarm of  graduates is planning a return to old stomping grounds this summer as the class of 1987 celebrates its 25th reunion.

On June 9 at the Lake Forest II , graduates will reunite for a daytime family get-together by the pool, followed by an evening, adults-only rendezvous in the club's main ballroom.

"We have the most amazing and supportive class [and] most of us have kept in touch via Facebook, seeing each other through good times and bad. We’ve prayed for sick children, said goodbye to loved ones, encouraged each other through divorces, lost jobs and moves out of state," said Terri Cole, chair of this year's reunion committee. "You would never know our class size was so large based on the close-knit community we have formed."

It's an "eclectic mix" of "nerds," "jocks," "prom queens" and "basket cases"—just like in the Breakfast Club, Cole joked—but all feel connected as 1987  graduates.

"That common bond has held us together despite the passing of years and, for some, miles of distance," Cole said. "We share a great affinity for our school and for the 80s."

Previous reunions have provided additional memories to complement those from their high school days, Cole said.

"Our 10-year class reunion will always be remembered because it was the night that Princess Diana died," Cole said. "It was at a hotel, over by the John Wayne Airport, that has since changed names at least a couple of times. It was the same hotel that hosted our senior class prom."

At the class's 20th reunion at a hotel in Costa Mesa, alumna and singer/songwriter Tober Mei and her band provided music and entertainment for the evening.

This year, Cole said the committee is for the first time organizing the festivities without planning company Great Reunions in order to cut costs.

In addition, the planning group decided to have the party at a location where they could host a family pool party before the main event.

"The was selected since so many of us spent so much time there growing up—a great many first kisses were shared amongst its hallowed shade trees!" Cole said. "It is a nostalgic place for a lot of us."

Festivities kick off June 9 with the family pool party from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The adults-only get-together is later that day from 7 to 11 p.m. Tickets for the pool party are $10 per adult and $5 per child. For the evening event, tickets cost $25 per person or $45 per couple. [See order forms to the right of this article.]
