Seniors Honor Veterans

More than 100 people show up to honor Veterans

On Thursday the Lake Forest Senior Center honored our veterans with an hour-long ceremony. I was privileged to represent the Council. Jim Rosenberg and Victor Sheer were there from the Parks Commission. More than 100 people filled the room to overflowing. More than a dozen Veterans were there, some from World War 2.

This year we made strides honoring our veterans. In June Councilman Robinson and I introduced the idea of re-naming Village Pond Park to Veterans Park and the Council unanimously went along, allocating money to build a monument, but otherwise keeping the design already on the books. The committee met 4 times, mostly veterans, and the final design will come to the Council on November 21.

Earlier this year I proposed that we allocate our affordable housing budget to create homes for Veterans and the Council unanimously agreed. Last month we chose a company to create the plan and we expect to pursue this worthy effort in early 2018, with an initial report coming on Nov 21.

I also got the staff to create a Veteran's Resource page on the city website.

Veterans are an important part of our community. We need to recognize their service and assist where we can.
