LAKE FOREST, CA — Two teenage girls, including one from south Orange County, were killed after a boat and WaveRunner crash on a lake in northeast Illinois Tuesday evening, authorities said.

The crash was reported on Lake Marie, a body of water connected to the Chain O'Lakes, at around 5:15 p.m.

Authorities said a 16-year-old girl from Lake Forest was driving a Yamaha WaveRunner and a 13-year-old girl from Long Grove, Illinois was her passenger.

The WaveRunner was traveling near the channel to Grass Lake when a boat operated by a 55-year-old Illinois man approached the same area, according to the Lake County Sheriff's office.

Lake County Sheriff's Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli told ABC 7 that the jet ski was traveling "at a high rate of speed" directly toward the boat when they crashed.
