Suspicious Chemical Spill In Irvine Apartment Prompts Investigation

IRVINE, CA — There was a heavy police presence at an apartment complex in Irvine Thursday, after a hazardous spill prompted emergency responders to issue a full hazardous materials investigation, the Irvine Police Department reported.

Two were detained after police officers found items used to refine marijuana products, including a flammable substance, inside the apartment affected by the spill.

"The hazmat incident is contained to a single unit," the Irvine Police Department said in a statement. "A large contingent of personnel will remain on scene for several hours to safely mitigate the issue."

The incident was reported at around 9:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 2, when officers were called to the 4200 block of Spectrum to respond to a hazmat incident at the Village Apartments.

The two occupants inside of the apartment apparently refused medical attention and were later detained by officers, the Orange County Register reported.

Irvine Police Sgt. Karie Davis told the newspaper that the department would work to attain a warrant to investigate the chemical that caused the incident.
