Three Safety Concerns You May Forget on 4th of July
Al Mikolajczyk, Director of Marketing for Cox Communications, offers a few reminders for this holiday weekend
As we celebrate America’s birthday we are always reminded to be safe and when using fireworks – if you’re in a city that allows fireworks. But there are three safety concerns you probably didn’t think about that merits reminding this July 4th.
- Keep your home secure.
Whether it’s a neighborhood block party, backyard BBQ or time away to visit the local park or beach to watch fireworks, homeowners can inadvertently leave their home open for unwelcomed visitors. If you don’t have a home security system, make sure you lock the doors and windows when you vacate the house. And if you are expecting visitors before your return, the inconvenience of sharing a house key is much better than coming home to a house that’s been vandalized or burglarized.
Also, if you have a home security system, make sure it’s activated. If your home security system is similar to Cox Homelife, you’ll be able to monitor what’s going on indoors and outdoors with cameras. You’ll also be able to control inside lights and smart door locks via your smartphone so you have extra security and flexibility. And when the heat picks up, you can remotely control your thermostat so the house will be nice and comfortable for you and your guests when you return. - Keep your pets safe.
The booming, popping and whistling of fireworks displays scare many dogs and may cause them to run away. Be sure to keep your pets inside and turn on the TV or radio to help conceal the fireworks noise. In case your pet does get out, be sure it has an updated name tag with current phone number along with a Pet microchip for pet recovery. To give you a better peace of mind, be sure to use your home security system’s indoor live camera feed to check on your pet. - Keep hazard detections up to date.
Consumer advocates recommend that households replace batteries in their hazard detection systems twice a year. Check to see if your carbon monoxide monitors, smoke detectors and water leaks sensors and flooding sensors are fully functioning. Some devices, such as those provided by Cox Homelife, are monitored and can even alert the monitoring center to dispatch first responders if needed. This will provide extra peace of mind while you are away and allow you to enjoy that holiday BBQ.
