WATCH: Coyote Confronts Mountain Lion

A hiker appears to have captured on video a local mountain lion spooking a coyote on a Whiting Ranch Regional Park trail.

The 58-second clip, taken at 7 a.m. Sunday, shows the coyote barking frantically at the mountain lion as the big cat saunters across the trail.

The video was shot in Whiting Ranch, the same area where a bicyclist was killed by a mountain lion eight years ago.

According to the YouTube post attributed to Robert Meyer, the video was taken on Serrano Road Trail, just south of the Dreaded Hill Road trail.

California mountain lions have been making headlines as of late.

This week, the California Department of Fish and Game called off a search for the mountain lion that attacked a sleeping camper in the Sierra Mountains, and in May authorities shot and killed a .

Locally, reports of multiple recent mountain lion sightings prompted park rangers to close Serrano Cow Trail on Monday—a pathway directly connected to the trail where the the mountain lion and coyote were filmed Sunday.

On July 8, a . Subsequent sightings prompted rangers to temporarily close the path. , but rangers  after additional sightings.

Roughly 36 hours after capturing the wild animals on tape, the Whiting Ranch video had garnered more than 300 views and 15 comments lauding the poster.
