Children’s Book Festival to Bloom in May 2012, But Seeds Planted Now

Deena While: "We're talking with a bunch of libraries and schools and trying to get as many partners as possible."

The crocus bulb is Deena While’s favorite flower in her home garden. It’s beautiful—with yellow, purple, white and sometimes multicolored patterns. More important, it’s incredibly low maintenance.

“The plant dies, but the bulb is still in the ground―and I forget about it and the next spring they come up again,” said While, owner of Readers Inc. in The Village.

This year, she’s encouraging everyone to plant flowers, though she won’t be the least bit offended if they aren’t crocus. She’s selling all sorts of bulbs in an effort to raise money for La Mesa’s first Children’s Book Festival next year―an event that will feature celebrity and local authors and illustrators as well as a variety of activities.

“It’s just really neat―everything has to do with children’s literacy,” While said. “We’re talking with a bunch of libraries and schools and trying to get as many partners as possible.”

The all-day festival is set for Sunday, May 20, 2012, and more information will be given as it is available. The bulb packets are $6 each and $3 will go toward the festival. For more information, contact While at 619-461-1400 or see attached order form.
