County Assessor Officiates Renewed Vows for Chula Vista Mayor McCann at`May The Fourth’ Wedding Celebration

Jordan Z. Marks, San Diego County Assessor-Recorder-County Clerk (ARCC), who also serves as the San Diego County commissioner of civil marriages, invited couples to get married or renew their wedding vows with a special Star Wars-themed wedding ceremony on Monday, May 4, a day known by Star Wars fans by the phrase, “May the Fourth be with you.”

It was the ARCC’s office first-ever, Star Wars-theme wedding celebration, complete with special Star Wars vows and decorations. Plans are underway to make the celebration an annual memorable experience for couples who share a love of the iconic saga.

The day began with a vow renewal by City of Chula Vista Mayor John McCann and wife Myllissa who have been married for 28 years.

“In every great love story, there is a spark that brings two people together, call it destiny or call it the Force,” Marks said. “On May 4, I become the Yoda of love and invited couples to begin their own happily-ever-after with a meaningful and unforgettable Star Wars inspired ceremony.”

The Downtown waterfront location was the only site hosting the themed ceremonies. Couples exchanged vows outdoors at the Waterfront Park wedding arbor with the historic County Administration Center as a backdrop or inside one of the office's ceremony rooms.

Couples were encouraged to wear costumes, including Jedi, Sith, droids or other character-themed attire. Marks served the role in officiating wedding ceremonies using Star Wars-inspired vows.

The ARCC Downtown San Diego office at the County Administration Center, 1600 Pacific Highway, is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., weekdays, for marriage license and wedding ceremony services. Free underground parking is available at the County downtown garage at the Ash Street entrance.

Cost for a marriage license is $129. Cost for an ARCC staff member to perform the ceremony in English or Spanish is an additional $107.

The ARCC office is responsible for issuing marriage licenses, birth and death certificates, as well as registering business names and recording all legal real estate documents. On average, the ARCC office provides nearly 25,000 marriage licenses and performs more than 11,000 weddings annually.
