Multicultural Open House

The students of Mt. Helix Academy are celebrating multiculturalism all this month, culminating with their annual international ethnic food buffet and tour of student projects on Thursday, March 29.  This year’s spotlighted countries/cultures include: Peru, Mexico, Kenya, Russia, China, Native Americans, Greece, Poland, India, Italy and the USA. Representative international cuisine from each culture will be prepared and served by Mt. Helix Academy parents beginning at 5:00 p.m.  Following the sampling of cuisine from the countries being studied, a tour of student projects will begin at 6:00 pm. Students spend all month studying the various aspects of each culture and construct elaborate presentations that they feel best represent the people and social history that they have been learning about.

Student projects this year include: writing their own myths; making origami, carp kites, kachina dolls, masks, sand paintings, leather projects, terracotta soldiers and Indian jewelry; giving power point presentations on various topics including the people and culture of Italy and the United States, Greek mythology, paper mache Pandas; fabricating African drums and Batik quilts, creating rain sticks, and much more.
