Grossmont Comeback Falls Short as Santana Explodes for 6 Runs

After losing 14-1 to Otay Ranch the day before, Santana High School handed host Grossmont High a 15-7 softball loss Thursday.

Hiller coaches scratched their heads as Santana finished the first four innings with a 9-0 lead.

Santana freshman Sydney Vates and senior Tara Grennan slugged home runs.

But in the fifth inning, Grossmont broke lose, scoring seven runs by scattering the field with singles and doubles.

Sophomores Sarah Nicks and Kira Elliot and junior Katherine Trego were among the Hillers who knocked in runs.

In the sixth inning, however, the Sultans gained another six runs and quieted Grossmont’s bench to win, recording their fourth win of the season for coach John Failla.

Grossmont, coached by Jerry Lerud, is 2-4 for the season and travels to Carlsbad for a tournament Saturday.
