SDSU Offers Two Intensive Wine Certificate Courses

SDSU's College of Extended Studies is offering two intensive wine courses as part of its Professional Certificate in the Business of Wine.

SDSU’s College of Extended Studies is offering two intensive wine courses as part of its Professional Certificate in the Business of Wine program. Intensive French Wines is Wednesdays, Oct. 29-Nov. 12, 6-9 p.m.; Intensive California Wines takes place Mondays, Nov. 3-17, 6-9 p.m.

Through extensive tastings, the Intensive French Wines course will cover the wines of Burgundy, Alsace, Cotes du Rhone, Bordeaux, Loire, and Champagne. Students will learn about varietals, wine production by region, terroir, vineyard sites, and quality levels.

Instructor John Alonge is founder of the San Diego Wine and Culinary Center, and author of The Wine Heretic’s Bible. Cost of the course is $239.

During the Intensive California Wines course, students will focus on the history, traditions, grapes, viti/viniculture practices, wine styles, and the future of California wines.

Instructor Maurice DiMarino is a sommelier who serves as the wine and beverage manager for the Cohn Restaurant Group. Cost of the course is $209 or $239 after Oct. 24.

“The highlights of the course probably would have to be the amount of information taken away in such a short period of time. There is a lot more to learn about wine than imagined,” former student Jennifer Sandoval said.
