Tennis Is Served: Grossmont Downs Helix in First League Contest
Tennis teams seek improved records over last year, with Hillers returning all members.
With identical 3-1 nonleague records, Helix and Grossmont high schools went racket to racket in their first league match of the season Thursday afternoon at Helix courts. The Foothillers prevailed 12-6.
Four of last year's players return for the the Highlander tennis team, coached by J. Diaz. For the Scotties, junior Han Pham is the No. 1 singles player; junior Alisha Donnell is the No. 2 player; and freshman Breanna Williams is the No. 3 singles player.
Highlanders Nicole Villa and Shelby Tanaka are the No. 1 doubles team and Abby David and Vivian Li comprise the No. 2 team.

Grossmont coach Hillary Park has all of last year's team returning, and she predicts improvement over last year's record. Junior Britta Welsch is the Hillers' No. 1 singles player, junior Kaylyn Pingel is the No. 2 player, and sophomore Sonya Stern is the No. 3 player.
In doubles competition, the No. 1 Grossmont team is seniors Kierney Loucas and Sarah Reuss, and the No. 2 team is Aimee Klabunde and Emma Davis.

Next Tuesday, Helix hosts West Hills, and Grossmont plays Steele Canyon at Steele Canyon High School.
