They are the Champions: Special-Ed Students Compete at Helix Charter High School
Fifteen to 20 take part on football field—with students in the stands, cheerleaders on the sidelines and teachers with teens on the field making memories happen.
Following a torch ceremony, the Games of Champions began as Helix Charter High School hosted a Special Olympics. About 15-20 students with severe intellectual and physical disabilities took part early Wednesday afternoon in bowling, “discus” throw (using a Frisbee), soccer goal challenge, agility course, and a long-ball challenge. The event was a joint effort of special-education teachers and student leaders.
Teacher Kim Fleming, organizer of the games, said she hoped it would be an annual event. She organized the games because “I wanted something for the kids to do.” Students from other classes sat in the stands and cheered competitors.
“It was amazing,” Fleming said. “I was floored by how much support they gave us.” The Helix Key Club sponsored the event and helped out, providing awards for each competitor. Associated Student Body students took part as spirit leaders, along with the Helix Cheer Squad and Dance Team.
